“Historic preservation is more than saving architectural masterpieces from the wrecking ball—though that’s a big part of it. The field has evolved to include safeguarding Native American sites, early homesteads, battlefields, landscapes, places important to civil rights and women’s rights and more. Much of the work of protecting the places Americans value is done by state and territorial preservation offices, which receive annual apportionments from Congress. Thirty-six states received more than $1 million each in fiscal year 2023, with total allotments topping $62 million.”
